Baby

baby sitter
an ugly critter
shook the baby
its head fell off
she fashioned a new one of paper and cloth
a carrot a nose
eyes of olives and cloves
cabbagey ears and lashes of brush
one eyebrow made from the wing of a thrush
she tied its head on with a garrotey tie
a tinker and donkey by chance passing by
admired the babe so much that they cried
"we know of a place where a babe might be homed
a beautiful place we espied as we roamed"
and without further ado they followed their hide
and their wanderings brought them the sunny seaside
they waved to the waves and the fishes waved back
launched the babe and the pram under the sail of a sack
how we laughed as it sailed the briny blue seas
the oceans deep and brave were as pleased
towed through the waves by squid and sea snail
to a river mouth, nearing the end its travail
some people said the story insane
the very same river to which this craft came
the baby stepped off, the sack in its hand
and planted the flag deep into the land
so was founded the city of Paris
