dolphin

the current upon which life has set its open keel
is by degrees
small troughs of learning and unlearnt
small squalls of wet and misery
and miserly warmth upon the beauty days
among that bright blue dessert
i tell you
by the dog star navigate your way
and from the north your barge may know
that ice in flows may form entrapments
in the coruscations of the timid colder places
and from the south
blue nosed dolphin
with their devilment through their trumpet beaks
will call or tease
or maybe point you to some southern haven
their clacking and their whistles
posed or raged against old Ulysses
for their trumpet voices
are the calls of chance
for she was blue as sky and water
on close reflection, almost green
and i
a mere land-brown man
compact like the earth
full of stones and worms
yet she just as impure
corrupt or gay with birdsong among the tearful clouds
sun scorched and waves burnt through with mystery
and so we lived
and as for love
it was as if the heady night crumbled into dust
and the clear air of the dawn day
was refreshed
but lay chill upon the fragile, emotive sheets
as when love stoops to folly in the dark hours
then rising and without adornment
sees its rough hide cast upon the mirror
it hears birdsong is without
and the sometime sweet jutxaposed
with often brusque voice of nature
somewhere beyond the walls
the walls to which the glass affixed
swings through times axis
onward as we silent walk by
to somewhere outside this house
where maturity in some pathway winds
