see how deep the wood lies
to the bone
and how the box and laurel
adorn the frayed horizon with their sultry weavings
darkness green absolves the passing light
see how the hill smooth curved and graced
is set upon her face
and how the dusk has laced her lash
as they flutter
see the seeds of eyes
brown corona as the core of apple fruit
fall demure upon the simple earth
and imagine her to run among infinite horses
of the dreamed and wild plashing shores
for from far off fields
i can hear loves hounds and beaters
running, coursing o'er the brow
whilst hiding in the open skies
i hear my voice
it breathes upon her trees and valleys
and its gentle undistinguished words
that rustle mong the laurel bush
ask
why can i no longer hear you darling girl ?
and the answer is that she had no friends
not living friends
that loved her without recourse to favours
or demanded something like say emotion or money
in their quiet insidious and inveigling way
so she left them on their foreign shores
and wandered barefoot and threadbare
dirty and unkempt
she set off upon a journey through a hostile world
her peers were the thorns
that set the plants against her instinct to eat them
and her carpet was the wretched sky in which she wrapped herself
the balm upon her tired limbs was the burnishing of an alien sun
and the sores upon her feet bled
until all remembering of the past
was scourged with peeling detritus
and the skin of those scar hard soles
