day

on such a gorgeous day as this
when the foot falls of the gods
have pierced the flooding clouds
and sent them scudding to the east
like frightened leaves upon gale
our misfortunes passed away to lodge
on some far distant hedge or rake
and sky o glorious sky
bluer than the clearest eyes
without the envy of the green chopped
and sullied seas
so pure a surface
one may marvel at its clarity
its subtle hue from zenith deep to thin horizons
arcing in the thinnest laminations
a wonder of complexity
a compound of both genius and loveliness
and such a world may ne'er exist again

on such a gorgeous day as this
when men must combat hand in hand
with themselves and destiny
and trusting to the clouds and gods
in simple sacrifice
may dictate fortunes of the world
by scudding cowardly from mental foes
or bravely standing in defiant ranks
to meet this day with gestures
that will echo till the end of our recorded time
that will stamp the histories of men
with golden clad achievement
