Wayward Lad
So you said, that burnished bitter day
Among the almonds their blossom
Fine reflected in the bossom
Of the desicated river
Its momentum and its path so lost
Below a Spanish sun
"There was a wayward lad
Stepped out one dawning day
The cold and crystal ground to be his bed"
But the sky was not to be his awning
Or his mantle
For there among the sainted trees
Near Santander he felt he loved her more dear
Than his own young and tortured soul
Indeed the gorgeous blossom fell upon her bossom
As clumsy love they made in earnest but in juvenillia
Hot and rugged like the soil but sparse
Except the relic trees and rich aroma
The sound the Spanish bells
That toil among the hills
Slow and languid as the peasants that they called
Suggested this would be his last love
And how he would defy the anger and repression
That glided like a cloud oer the picas
And the herbal wilderness of sage and snakes
For snakes slid upon the villas
And through the stone cast lintels
As to the hills with guns the rebels took
And once captured with those 'bon amigos'
Hands like clouds aloft
Their slow sure steps
On fractured rock the fragrant path of goats to town
To be exampled
So they were duly executed
Close by the cemetary wall
But unlike the ritual way of death
They were thrown to an unmarked pit, all creased
One upon the other
And Disappeared
Maybe forgotten dust and bone and crystal
Yet a knot of yearning and remembered love
Cried somewhere in the hills among the prefumed sage
The tears of never knowing
Though the sun cared not
But how it pained the wretched hollows neath the skies
and future glories of Cantabria

picas refers to the picas d'euopa high mountains that run along the northern coast though from recollection theyre more the pyrenian end and full of sage and herbs and snakes, wild pigs, vultures, swallowtails, and eagles
